Problems

Kerkennah has had very big problems for many years:

-The supplying of the archipelago with drinking water is limited and the majority of wells are drained.

-The access to the archipelago is only possible by ferry, which takes 1 hour.

-The impossibility to build an airport because the ground is soft.

-The absence of an lock which provokes le retreat of the island in the face of the sea.

-The lack of intensive medical help which forces wounded to be transferred on the continent by helicopter.

With all these problems, the archipelago doesn't attract tourists and the population is ageing that which provoks a missing of development of the island.

Solutions?

Principal solutions which have been considered are:

-Concerning the problem of water, french missionnaries tried to dig wells but without success. Also, a project of traitment of the sea has been performed but it was a failure.

-About isolation, a project of construction of a bridge has been in statement since over of 10 years because fortunated families don't want that Kerkennah to become a peninsula.

-About tourism a project of construction of a hotel complex and a touristic airport is in preparation.

Kerkennah must survive....
